7 Weeks

7 week ultrasound

Today we went for the first ultrasound.  The technician said everything looked perfect! The baby is still very small, about a centimeter long, and we could see the heartbeat, head, spinal cord, umbilical cord, amniotic fluid and yolk sac.  We got to hear the heartbeat and it measured at 160  beats per minute, which is healthy.  The size of the baby indicated that I’m 7 weeks and 5 days along, a little bit younger than the doctor expected, but right in line with what I thought.  They didn’t move the due date of March 9, but I still think the baby will come late.  Ed and I are so excited about our baby!

Telling our Families

July 19, 2009

Tonight, we told our families about the baby.  First, we stopped by my parents’ house.  My mom and Jon were there, but Dad and Nate were up with the horses.  When they finally got home, I said “Mom, I got this book you might be interested in” as I handed her the names for new grandparents book.  She screamed and hugged me before anyone else realized what was going on.  Then we all talked for a little while about the baby before we had to head over to Ed’s parents’ house.  My mom was so excited, but I think my dad and brothers were in shock.

Since we were celebrating Ed’s mom’s birthday tonight, I gave her the book as a present.  When she pulled it out of the bag and read it, she screamed and started crying, then hugged us.  Ed’s dad shook his hand and hugged me.  Chris, Melissa and Kate were there, so now all of our immediate families know about the baby.

We’ve made everyone promise to keep it a secret until September, when I’m out of the first trimester.  We’re all excited to tell our grandparents that they’re going to be great-grandparents!

Ed and I couldn’t be happier.

5 weeks

July 17, 2009

I’ve been taking a lab course for the last three weeks, and spent yesterday writing a 36 page lab report.  I’ve found it really hard to concentrate on anything lately.  All I want to think about is the baby.

At about five weeks, the baby’s eyes are developing, and so is the little heart which will begin to beat soon.  It’s so amazing to imagine this little embryo growing inside me.  It still doesn’t seem real, almost like a dream.

We haven’t told our families yet, but plan to soon.  I got two books about nicknames for grandparents, and I plan to give them those and let them figure it out.

I feel like I can’t wait to start telling everyone, but that will most likely have to wait until September when I’m 12-14 weeks along.  Meanwhile, I find myself secretly daydreaming about the baby often.  My husband’s first question when he sees me every night is “How’s baby?” I hope to find out at our first appointment next week.

I’m Pregnant!

July 5, 2009

A few days ago, I took some early pregnancy tests.  The results were so light, I wrote them off as negative.  Today, I took another test.  Again, the “plus” vertical line was very light, but I read in the instructions that any line is a line… So to verify there was a line, I ran another test under water as a control.  The difference between the two tests was visible.  Still doubing the results, I went out and bought a digital test.  The result was clear:

summer 09 407

My husband’s reaction when I told him the news was “scared and happy, but more scared than happy.”  He has since gotten used to the idea.  Keeping the pregnancy a secret is the hardest part, and we plan to tell our families in a week or two.
